5 Interesting Facts about Money Heist Series: Korea – Joint Economic Area!


The latest Korean show Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area will soon air on Netflix on June 24. Adapted from the phenomenal show La Casa de Papel (Money Heist), this series presents the story of a band of robbers under the direction of a leader named Professor who plans to carry out the biggest heist in history from the Korean Unification Mint’s building.

Director Kim Hong-Sun along with the cast, including Jun Jong Seo, Park Hae Soo, Yoo Ji Tae, Kim Yunjin, Kim Seung Oh, and writer Ryu Yong Jae today appeared at a press conference to further discuss the series. Find the following interesting facts!

Both director Kim and writer Ryu stated that the La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) series made them both fascinated and curious. “So many characters with their own personalities and charms it’s really fun to watch,” said Kim.

He also believes that watching these characters in different locations and time settings will be just as exciting. “Korea as a backdrop can make it a very original and new series,” he said. “From the start I realized that this series had to appear very realistic and as I reflected on it, it seemed like inter-Korean relations in this series could materialize in a setting in the not-too-distant future.”

With a different time and location setting in this new series, Ryu stated that not only does he imitate the existing series, he still brings the charm of the characters from the original series as well as gives a unique Korean touch.

The long history and relationship between the two Korean countries is also highlighted. Ryu said that the dynamic chemistry between the residents of North and South Korea is illustrated through various interactions within the thief group and the task force unit that tries to hinder their actions.

While the robber characters in La Casa de Papel are synonymous with red jumpsuits and Salvador Dali masks, Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area introduces a traditional Korean mask from the Andong region called Hahoe.

This white mask with a mysterious smile is called Park Hae Soo, the actor who plays Berlin, has a critical attitude towards the authorities as well as a touch of humor. “Viewed from various angles he will look different,” he said. Meanwhile, Jun Jong-seo who plays Tokyo said that the smile on the mask implies a sense of humor but also a mystery. “This mask has various meanings, and I am very interested in making it,” he said.

Professor, a genius strategist who is full of confidence is quite a unique figure in Yoo Ji Tae’s eyes. “I’ve played so many villainous roles before, but this is my first time playing a strategist who commits crimes but at the same time doesn’t want victims.”

Meanwhile, the cold-hearted Berlin, for example, is a former forced labor prisoner who escaped from a North Korean prison. “He is an embodiment of the suffering that both North and South Korea experience,” said Park Hae Soo. On the other hand, Tokyo is the most different character from the original character. Jun Jong Seo as the actor said, “He is a Gen Z and is in his 20s. She used to be an ordinary girl from North Korea and wished she wanted to make her dream come true.”

Various challenges have also colored the preparation process of the players in this series. Park Hae Soo recounted his preparations for playing the character of Berlin with the Pyongyang dialect by attending a number of trainings from a tutor, to listening to several recordings to perfect his accent.

Lee Won Jong is also no less serious when preparing for his role as Moscow. “We have actors who are from the Kyongsang area, the southern part of South Korea. For a whole month we practiced really hard to learn the dialect and accent from him, even practicing with gestures and actions,” he said.
