M’sian Grandmother’s RM30,000 Cash Savings For Mecca Gets Eaten by Termites

Much of the older generation simply prefer to stash their savings at home as cash rather than deposit it into banks. However, a dream to visit Mecca was destroyed after a Malaysian man’s grandmother found out that termites ate her cash savings.

The grandson, Muhammad Khairul Azhar Mat Nawi spoke to Harian Metro about the incident and revealed that about RM30,000 was saved up by his grandmother.

“She operates a small business where she sells kuih and these money are her hard-earned savings from her business”, he said, adding that his grandmother had started saving a few years ago.

Although the family was aware of their grandmother’s desire to head to Mekah through a private company and that she was saving up for it, they weren’t aware that she was saving all her money in a box wrapped in a piece of cloth.

“If we knew she was saving her money in a box, we would’ve advised her against it.”

Khairul revealed that his grandmother is 72 years old and probably thought it was more convenient to save her money in a box than to head over to a bank and that the family first found out about this when his mother headed home to visit his grandmother.

“We’ll send the money in for assessment to see if it can be replaced but I was told that if the notes are 50% destroyed, the banks may not be able to replace it”, he mentioned.

As of now, the family has decided to chip in and replace the RM30,000 so they can send their grandmother for her Mecca trip next year.

“We hope this serves as a lesson to those who are also keeping their notes in boxes.”

We hope this serves as a reminder for everyone to be more careful on how and where they store their cash.
